The Lakes was established in 1928 and opened for play in 1930 on the old Botany Water Reserve. Its original layout used plans prepared by Tom Howard and Eric Apperly.
Construction of the Mascot Freeway closed the course in 1968, forcing a major redesign before golf could resume.
